Once again Dean Koontz has written a beautiful and heartwarming story. I LOVE this guy! My heaven would be to sit on a porch and just listen while he told me his stories. His understanding of life is incredible. He knows not just the souls of people, but dogs too. 10,000 stars if that were possible.
Dean Knootz is one of my favorite authors; maybe, my favorite.
Whenever a synopsis of DK's latest mentions a dog, especially a golden retriever, I'm purchasing the with Audible that same day.
When his muse, Trixie, joins Knootz at the keyboard, they deliver. They deliver a story that is a nail-biter that grabs you by the heart.
I was heavily involved in canine rescue for 7 years. When I heard the heroine was to be a dog rescuer, my wait for this book began. Sadly, my great expectations meant the book had no chance of living up to them. Never mind the paranormal overtones. The most unbelievable thing was that Amy, with no income, bought a house and two purebred puppies which she raised while establishing and running a rescue organization. All of those things require considerable money. My rescue efforts were for, and 2 of my 3 large dogs were mutts,so I never paid big bucks to a breeder. Also, I was just a volunteer with expenses only for my dogs and my fosters. Even so, the only way I had the time and money to do it was that I was retired with a reasonable pension. While Amy had been married to a wealthy man, she supposedly did not have access to his fortune and she didn't work to make any money. As I read, I kept wondering how she paid for her and her dogs' living expenses. Her boyfriend had a job. It might have been more believable if she had been living with him, but they maintained seperate households. Still, being a major dog lover; especially when it comes to rescue dogs, I did thoroughly enjoy the book.
If you like Dean Koontz you should read Darkest Evening of the Year. I enjoy his work but some are more intriguing than others. This is one of them!!
Well..first, I haven't written a review before....a real review... simply because I am inept at doing so. But, this book compelled me to try. I listened to this book on the CD format as I do all books today.

"Darkest Evening of the Year", for me, is a fantastic book. I was hooked from the very beginning. The cast of charactors; Amy, Brian, Nickie, Hope and others of the "good" persuation are wonderful. I really got to "know" them so well. The cast of charactors of the "evil" persuation were evil to the enth degree. Particularly Vanessa and Harro. I've never read where the female charactor can be so evil! I couldn't wait to see what happens to her.

The passion for which this book was obviously written is evident throughout the story. As I was listening, I found myself rivited to the point of gasping out loud, tears rolling down my cheeks. Other times, smiling. The narrator, Kirsten Kairos, has a voice perfect for this story. At least, I think so. Narration can make or break and audio book and this one definately was made.

Too sum up, I loved this book and I highly recommend either version audio or written. I happen to be a fan of audio versions. This is a page turner or a disk changer for sure. I loved the ending as well. The twists and how the charactors were interwined surprised me at times.

Since I am not a professional critic but only a casual reader, I don't pick apart the whys and wherefors of a story. I only know what I like and I love this one. Thank you, Mr Koontz, for a wonderful story.

Like I said, I am not good at writing reviews, but I hope this has helped someone decide about getting this book.

Watchers was the first book I read by Dean Koontz. That book projected me to another world. I was in Cancun, Mexico beside a swimming pool at a Hyatt. Someone called my name. I was so immersed in that book that I didn't hear anything. Dean Koontz books will grab you and not let go. I love this author n\c he loves dogs! Read The Darkest Evening. It gets an A+.
If we didn't already have so many rescue dogs, I would want a Golden right now!
My husband and I are both reading this book simultaneously on our s. There are no other sounds in the house except the click of paw nails on ceramic tiles and the panting of dogs who have successfully protected our yard from the one person out enjoying a walk through the neighborhood.
I observe our canine friends with a renewed sense of their wondrous souls.
Dean Koontz never fails to disappoint!
Not one of his better books, Looking at the cover makes you think that it is going to be a great story about a dog, But the main character is not the dog. point of view jumped around too much for me. The book was good just not one of my favorites.
