As the name suggests, this installment of the Green Rider series finds Karigan in Blackveil Forest. That, however, isn’t the only thing of importance. I love how the story follows subplots that are all, somehow, related. Each character has a backstory and a motive of some sort.Karigan G’ladheon is the ever faithful, ever loyal Green Rider. She knows her duty to her monarch and to the messenger service. The Weapons have adopted her as a sister-in-arms, an honor rarely bestowed. She is also the first knight in hundreds of years. She has found herself so far from the girl she was when she ran away from Selium all those years ago. She is stronger, better trained, and still determined to do what is right for her country and her king.
Captain Laren Mapstone of the Green Riders is innundated with new Riders thanks to the discovery of the horn of the First Rider. Her duties are, as ever, centered around serving her king. Her devotion to her king is absolute.
King Zachary Hillander is a just king. However, his decisions are not always popular. One of his most popular decisions was his engagement to Lady Estora. He knows that all he does has to be for his country, even if his heart doesn’t always agree. He will make the decision, no matter how difficult it may be, but that doesn’t mean he will ever forget.
Lady Estora Coutre has had to make some adjustments since her engagement was announced. As the future queen, there is a never-ending amount of things to be taken care of. She is bound by her duty to her clan, her country, and even her growing affection for her fiance.
Lord Xandis Amberhill is a relative of the king. He once took the guise of the Raven Mask until citcumstances demanded his occupation change from gentleman thief. His obsession with Karigan’s secrets seems like it will never be satisfied and now he feels the call to go to sea.
Alton D’Yer, heir of D’Yer Province and Green Rider, is tasked with protecting the Wall and defending the breach. Blackveil Forest lays dormant for now, but Alton knows that cannot remain forever. The Wall guardians have no answers, but someone Alton meets might.
Estral Andovian is the daughter of the Golden Guardian of Selium. She is a minstral by trade and finds herself at the Wall, hoping to record the history of it. She finds herself put to work with a few lines of music Alton thinks may be important for the maintenence or repair of the Wall.
Grandmother has led some of her Second Empire cronies into Blackveil. She believes she is under orders from her god to find and wake the sleepers. While she might not know exactly what this means, she will do it. Nothing is going to stop her from completing her task.
The Eletians make an appearance as they are half of the party entering Blackveil. They want to enter Blackveil to see what remains of Argenthyne, their lost capital city. There is also something specific they hope to find near Laurelyn’s castle.
There are so many other characters in this novel that are so important to this novel. If I tried to list them all, I know I would forget some. There are so many wonderful, developed characters. They all seems so real: the Green Rider afraid of horses, the elderly castellan who sleeps through Council meetings, the scheming cousin intent on advancing himself. They are all so real.
So much happens in this book. There are message errands, parties, assassination attempts, mutated animals of Blackveil, and unexpected character deaths (If you ever ask me what happens in a book, I will always say, “Everyone dies.”). This is a wonderful installment in the Green Rider series, even if it does have a terrible cliffhanger.

The best one yet! I love the humor woven through these books and the characters are wonderfully three-dimensional! I am hesitant to continue reading the series because according to the reviews I've read the next book leaves the things I love the series for and goes in a. New direction. This book leaves a lot of loose ends.I am not sure I would have read this far if I had known there would be such an abrupt change but I am invested in the people and the story line so much now I probably will continue any way.
This book was darker than the previous ones. It started out normal enough but once they were in Blackveil, there was an obvious difference. It was more violent, more depressing. From losing the first member of their party to bloodsucking hummingbirds to one of the Elations being yanked away by vicious, black roots, her screams heard until they abruptly end. Karigan spends much of the time in Blackveil hallucinating due to some thorns that got her leg. I would be hesitant to let younger kids read this book unlike the previous books. I might at least expect nightmares from them if they did.
I pretty much agree with almost everyone else, getting tired of these cliffhanger endings with 3-4 years in between books. This book didn't feel like a complete story, felt like part 1 of a book. It has been so long since the first book (13 yrs?)that I forget everything that happened in the others. You would think the publisher would put a limit on the timeline in between books. There are plenty of really good authors out there who have multiple series they are writing, and they don't take as long to publish. I will finish the series, but you might as well wait for the paperback version, or for me the cheaper kindle version, because what's another year?
She is a very good story-teller, and I agree this one is much darker than the rest. I'm very disappointed that this felt like half a book. There are too many other good books to read out there than to feel like I have to re-read every book in the series before the next one comes out so I know what's going on. I did that before the last one, because I thought the series was a trilogy, but I'm not doing it again. If she's going to wait so long between books, maybe there should be a synopsis of them at the beginning of each one?
If I knew ahead of time, I would wait until the whole series is out, then read them all.
Wow. I forgot how great this book was. Frustrating as hell, but great. When I initially read this a few years ago, I had thought it to be the last one, going just off the title. The epic finale I had sought was finally here!
Alas, I was wrong, lol.
My emotions are so strung out from this book, and even though I'm about to jump right into my first reading of the 5th book (perhaps this is the last one...?), I still haven't the faintest idea of what will happen.
And not to sound like a total girl, but.......I WANT A HAPPY ENDING FOR KARIGAN AND ZACHARY!!! Ugh!
Deep breath, Sheena, deep breath. -P
Another thing I liked so much about this book is the fact that the Eletians were so much more prevalent in this book than the others. They travel with Sacoridians into Blackveil as a unit, and you get to know some of them and their ways, and quirks, a bit better. I don't know about anyone else, but I love the Eletians, and I love any scene involving them.
This is such a great book, and series, and there are so many twists and turns, laughter and loss (I put her up there in John Green/Veronica Roth status when it comes to killing off her characters), love, hate, adventure, etc. that I think almost anyone could enjoy these.
Definitely top 10 favorite series, ever. -)
