This is an amazing second installment to the Shadow series. In Avalon, Shadow takes back stage while her two sons battle Nestines on the surface world. After two years, Arthur and Kai discover that their protections have been breached through the earrings they all wear. Nestines seem to be able to track their movements. They return to Avalon to figure out a way to alter the devices. Avalon’s seers have been infiltrated with Nestine drones in an attempt to get to Arthur. Though they escape, Arthur finds it necessary to bring Circe back to the surface with them. Circe has spent years trying to get pregnant with Arthur’s seed, which he continued to deny her. Can she be trusted?
This action packed edition is filled with new drama and intrigue. Arthur tries to stay one step ahead of the Nestines who seem to have a brilliant tactician of their own. Then there’s Arthur’s sire, Uther, who Arthur needs to contact in his quest for the sword – a family legacy. I couldn’t wait for that confrontation and wasn’t disappointed with the mixture of emotions their meeting created. The characters are all expertly drawn in this creative world. I was happy to get to know Circe, who I didn’t care for in the first book. She now comes across as someone you want to cheer for. Amazing storytelling! Highly Recommended.

Sword of Shadows eBook CN Lesley Reviews

In this excellent sequel many questions are answered, yet the story is so deftly written, more questions remain, which means there might be another book! It would be unfair to go into the plot here, as there are numerous plots with numerous characters, and with them many twists and turns.

I thoroughly enjoyed not only the story but the prose and well developed writing. There are a lot of science fiction books out there but this is so much more. It is full of fabulous layers of fantasy intertwined with a realism that takes you right into the world created. From the Nestine predators who farm human flesh to the heroes and alliances made to defeat them, this was an epic and a wonderful spectacle.

I am looking forward to news of another book in this series.
Highly recommended.
This is the second book in a series but I didn't, for a minute, feel like I missed anything, or was being fed too much information. The setting is unique and so well drawn you feel like you're there with Arthur.
His emotion and depth shine through from the first sentence, as his men are being stalked and killed by a hostile group called Nestines. This isn't just a let's-save-ourselves kind of story. There is great conflict instilled into the plot itself in that the two factions trying to capture Arthur and Kai--one to eat and one to breed. Great story telling, dialogue and emotion!
Arthur and Kai, the half-brothers who were born to rule, are are now grown men and battle hardened warriors. When we met them in Shadow Over Avalon, they were boys and their worlds, above and below the waves, were under peril from the vicious Nestines. But Avalon - their one place of safety - will only support life for a few more generations. An ancient sword and its magic could be the key to humanity's survival; the quest to find it is the crux of this story. In a twist, the Nestine's own survival is dependent on obtaining genetic material from Arthur and some of his followers. A split in the Nestine ranks doubles the danger as our heroes find themselves fighting on two fronts.
Sword of Shadows develops the epic saga which started with Shadow Over Avalon. A welcome addition is Arthur 's half-sister Avriel, a spirited War Maid, who quickly assumes centre stage. The end, while satisfying, is also a beginning. Looking forward to the next instalment.
This post apocalyptic Arthurian tale takes up where Shadow Over Avalon leaves off. After reading Shadow, I had to find out what happened next to Arthur and his brother Kai. These stories are not a rehash of the Knights of the Round Table but a sci-fi/fantasy set in the future. The story references the old legends with a hint that Arthur has had many lives since the times of the round table.

This story starts with Arthur and Kai exiled to the planet surface, which is hostile enough without the evil Nestines trying to kill everyone with any psychic powers. Psychic powers are a result of breeding and exposure to mutating radiation. Of course this means the Nestines are after Arthur and Kai. To complicate the story, the rebel Nestines would like to eat Arthur and Kai, while the followers of the queen wish to capture them for breeding. Our heroes must rescue Arthur’s father the Dragon Duke, attempt to avoid capture themselves, restore order at the Brethren home at Haven and form alliances between themselves, Avalon, and the Nestines. All of this leads to a tale of loyalty and betrayal. The reader is never quite certain who our heroes can trust. Being young men they also manage to fall in love while avoiding capture.

This story is definitely, a post-modern tale that crosses genre lines and avoids the formulas one expects in science fiction and fantasy. I enjoyed the mystery, suspense and escape to another world and can highly recommend this book.
I read the first book, 'Shadow Over Avalon' earlier this year and found it a unique retelling the Arthurian legend, unlike anything else I had ever read on the subject. It did take me a while to get accustomed to the setting, factions and characters only because of its uniqueness. When I started reading 'Sword of Shadows,' there was no disorientation. I knew right where I was and understood the characters and factions immediately. The story driving forward from there is swift and exciting. The author has created an inventive world comprised of earth, sea and space.
The evolution of Arthur and Kai's relationship is great throughout, Kai being incredibly more powerful and interesting than in many other tellings. The Nestines continue to be a disruptive, inhuman presence plaguing the inhabitants of the world. Kiri Ung's character develops and the reader discovers a strange but believable devotion to his queen and species.
Highly recommended! Five stars!
