Coming Storm David J Morden 9781542316392 Books Reviews
Different, short and quick and I enjoyed it. I hope the characters develop more and that we get to know them.
This is old-school sci-fi at its very best. I’m not so much a fan of science fiction these days but this is a throwback to some of the classics I loved while growing up. You aren’t thrown in the deep end of action as you first begin reading as there are some important revelations and world-building necessary first. And once things get going they really get going.
The writing is really quite compelling but doesn’t make unnecessary technical complications like some sci-fi authors feel the need to do. Morden lets the characters and plot do that work and the book is all the much stronger for it. I’m now a fan and I’ll be back for more Morden.
Coming Storm by David J. Morden is a great example of simple and pure science fiction. It almost has a retro vibe making it appealing to a lot of different people, old and young alike. A fantasy, dystopian novel really geared toward the YA audience, the writing is good enough for adults as well. With a vast history of wars and destruction, this novel begins on tenuous ground, times are tough. The Syndicate is a rising nation on the threshold of taking over many lands with their technological endeavors. The Syndicate is investigating a specific section called the Low, which in the past had magical powers. The Syndicate wants to claim these mysterious powers for themselves, and will go to extreme lengths to harness them. There are a lot of characters to keep track of, but they are fairly well drawn and work well and cohesively in the story. The plot moves forward nicely with a bit of tension to keep it interesting. Highly recommend for a fantastical read that reminds one of classic science fiction.
If you are looking for an E-book that will entertain you for the time being, that has a retro feeling to it, try this gem out! It started off slowly but eventually became fast-paced as I got to the middle of it with the characters and plot having a Star Wars meets Conan the Barbarian edge that will cause the nostalgic in you to call it a favorite for the moment. The focus is on two areas called the Low and the government-esque Syndicate who is venturing into the Low to claim it and for purposes that have to do with researching the magical elements that the Low is known for.
This story has a lot of characters and the main ones I think are the sorcerer titled Old Owl, the dark-haired siblings Maeca and Boan, Rima the matriarch of the tribe of Ursan Mao that settled in the Low after Old Owl put an end to their capturers, Neira the Syndicate’s fierce and vicious researcher, and Commanders Kaul, Finn, and Trate. They all come face to face with the bloodthirsty monsters known as the Kran who are half ant and half primate who seem to feed on the impact of their weapons and magic instead of diminishing under them.
I urge you the bookworm to try this one out and see if it will enthrall you as it has done to me. Please disregard of the unexciting front cover image (if you are not into retro and the 70s or 80s) because the story is astonishingly addictive. I could not put it down when the battle started. I can see it being made into an action-packed motion picture like the ones I mentioned early on in this review because the writing is good, the lines of the characters are superb, and the pacing is excellent. I will not reveal further details about this book because that will spoil its appeal. I recommend it to all fans of the Sci-Fi channel and to those who grew up in the 80’s on films like Krull, Star Wars, and Conan the Barbarian. My overall favorite character in this book is Red Rabbit who appeared later for her aesthetics and grueling dislike for an equally vicious female character. Find out about their feud and more when you buy this book today! Enjoy!
For fans of both sci-fi and fantasy, this is great story which blending both genres. The author not only pits technology against magic, but also introduces several competing factions, some even within themselves. In relatively short read you are quickly introduced not only to the dynamic world Morden creates, but also some suspenseful action peppered with the development of some likely to be complex relationships and personal moral decisions. You'll be left wanting more. I look forward to more from Morden's series.
