Bewitching Jill Barnett 9780671778637 Books

Written in 1993, the book is very long, almost 500 pages. Each scene is dragged out. The language is cutesy (everything is "wee" or "dreamy"), the plot is cheesy and saccharine ("she grinned, then giggled, then hugged her arms and closed her dreamy eyes"). Every time she sneezes, she creates what's on her mind - it's like a really bad Disney movie.

The choice and repetition of words are off putting : giggle occurs 22 times, squeal/squeak 9 times, dreamy 11 times, "oh my goodness" 26 times, wee 73 times, chew 26 times (chewing lips or hair).

I would say the book is written for 6 year olds except for the sex. The book started well enough with a bit of humor but quickly lost its appeal for me. I know the author wants to create a heroine who is adorable but in my opinion, she is incompetent, and silly to boot. I am really tired of her "oh my goodness" - maybe it's cute in 1993 for toddlers but just not for me. Inept, obtuse, childish and self-pitying heroines are not my cup of tea.

The author tried to meld Disneyesque characters and dialog with sexy romance and social commentary but in a way that just didn't work. It would have been better if she did away with all the inane cutesy language.

Bewitching Jill Barnett 9780671778637 Books Reviews

A young witch knows she's having a bad day when her spells end in disaster. However, Fate can turn a disaster into a future love-match, with enough time and patience. Such is Joyous Fiona MacQuarrie's unexpected reality when she literally falls into a duke's arms.

Known for his obsessive control of all that is within his ducal sphere, Alec Castlemaine, Duke of Belmore never raises his voice, never looses his temper, is always on time and always in control. That is until a wee Scottish lass literally falls into his arms. His life has just made a 180 degree turn....for the better.

I absolutely loved this book. It now ranks as one of my top 10 all-time favorites. Besides being well written, with great dialogue, believable characters, a lovable heroine and a reluctantly teachable hero, the hysterical moments had me laughing so hard I could hardly catch my breath. The unique plot, with its fairy tale slant, had a number of twists and seriously emotional moments that were the perfect balance to the outrageously funny moments.

All in all, this is a great read. That said, there is some descriptive marital intimacy and a wee bit of frustrated swearing. Which is why I must limit my recommendation to adult readers.
"From the moment she saw him, some thread had linked them together. This man needed her. He needed her her hope and her magic."

FINAL DECISION Charming and sweet this romance is fantasy and magic combined with historical romance. Ultimately, I liked the book but felt that the connection between the main characters was not as strong as I would have liked.

THE STORY Alec Castlemaine, Duke of Belmore is rejected by his carefully selected bride because he is too predictable and boring and without love. He turns and marries the first woman who he meets and gets more than he expected. Joyous Fiona MacQuarrie is a Scottish witch who can't control her magic. When she meets Alec, she feels a connection with him and believes that her magic can bring something to his life. When Alec realizes that he has married a witch it doesn't fit within his restrictive view of what is proper for the Duchess of Belmore. But Joy may be exactly what Alec needs.

OPINION I thought this story was charming and different than other books. I liked the story and the romance. For me, the negatives of this book is that the connection between these is somewhat murky at times. Joy is sweet but too naive for most of the book. She marries a stranger and then is shocked by his reaction to her being a witch. Her reactions feel immature. Alec was a character that i enjoyed especially as he developed throughout the book. His characters moves and develops in a way that I didn't feel that Joy did.

WORTH MENTIONING I loved the twist that finally shatters Alec's stoic facade.

CONNECTED BOOKS This book is connected with the subsequent book DREAMING.

STAR RATING I give this book 3.5 stars.
A very amusing tale about a witch who cannot properly cast spells and as a result gets into all sorts of situations with unintended consequences.

The Duke, Alec, was brought up in a harsh environment by unloving parents. Read this as part of the ongoing project to help a friend with a reading list for her Adult Children of Parents with PTSD group.
His eminently suitable fiancee jilted him and a flower seller tells him he will marry the first woman he sees next which, of course, turns out to be the witch. His motive was to ensur4e that Britain's ton would believe he didn't care a fig that the fiancee jilted a Duke to marry a mere Captain. Alec has a hard time believing his wife is a witch although she eventually convinces him when they are stranded in a blizzard in an inn.

I laughed myself silly when her very first orgasm results in a shower of pink rose petals. All I could think of was that now Alec would have performance anxiety and she would never be able to fake it.

Happy to report it is not the love of a good woman that is the turning point for Alec and gives him the much need perspective he needed to reassess his childhood and the way he was raised. He makes a discovery about his parents which reveals them to be the cruel, shallow people they were.
